Keeping lips healthy is important year-round, but especially in time for Valentine’s Day – the year’s most kissable holiday. Do your health – and your sweetheart – a favor and rehab dry, cracked winter lips before sharing sweets with your valentine on February 14th.
- Exfoliate. Starting with a smooth canvas is the key to ensuring that makeup and lip balm go on evenly. As part of your morning routine, lightly exfoliate lips with a wet toothbrush or washcloth to remove dry flakes.
- Protect and Moisturize. Lips are highly susceptible to disfiguring and potentially deadly skin cancers because they are exposed to the sun every day. Daily sun protection should be the basis of any lip care regimen, and this entails protecting them with an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen stick (designed specifically for the lips), or a lip balm or lipstick with an SPF 15 or higher. Take special care to protect the lower lip, which receives the most direct sunlight.
- Reapply. Remember to reapply lip protection every two hours, especially after eating or drinking. It’s also important to apply a moisturizing lip product before bed, to combat nighttime dryness.
- Hydrate. Unlike the rest of your skin, lips tend to dry out and become chapped easily since they do not contain oil glands. Drink lots of water to keep lips from drying out, and avoid licking your lips, which also saps moisture.
