Winter Sun

Jeffrey Sassmannshausen, MD

It is just around the corner. Yes, winter is coming, and predictions are that it is going to be a cold and snowy one. Has anyone else noticed how early the birds are flocking, and the flies have been so annoying?

As the seasons change, remember that sun protection should not. The sun still shines every day--365 days of the year (even when it is cloudy)! So, don’t forget the sunscreen. When there is snow, the sun’s rays are amplified as they are reflected back up to your face off of the icy ground. And if you happen to go skiing, the higher altitude also increases their intensity.

We have many forms of sunscreen available. There are the everyday morning sunscreens. There are super screens which also provide antioxidant protection. There are sunscreens that protect from the constant blue light from computer and phone screens. Powders and sticks make it impossible for someone to say they don’t like the feel of a lotion on their skin. We also now have a sunscreen that will help lessen the oil on your face giving a double whammy to your sun protection.

Stay safe, stay warm, stay sun damage-free this winter!
